Marvel Restricted Tom Holland's Venom Role, According to New Rumor

According to an insider, Tom Holland's appearance as Spider-Man was restricted in Sony's Venom-verse by Marvel Studios.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man required the most wrangling from these higher-ups during the MCU brain trust's meticulous planning of their super-powered universe.

Marvel Studios has had to walk a fine line between getting along with Sony Pictures, who still holds the rights to Spidey on the big screen, and using the character in their own narrative. Sony Pictures continues to release films in its own Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSMU).

Holland's wall-crawler hasn't yet made a proper appearance in an SSMU movie (aside from some reused footage in Venom: Let there be Carnage), but it turns out that is for no reason.

Heavy Spoilers on YouTube claims that Marvel Studios prohibited Sony Pictures from including a cameo appearance by Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the 2018 film Venom.

Tom Holland was supposed to appear in [Venom], but "Marvel Studios pulled the plug on it and said, 'No way,'" according to their report.

The requirement that the franchises "connect to the MCU" was mentioned as "one of the stipulations" in Marvel Studios' new contract with Sony (signed in 2019), something that fans have already seen play out in very minor ways.

This made it possible for Kevin Feige to do what he described in Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credit stinger as "basically [yank] the Venom symbiote and put it in the MCU."
